616-947-4050If you live in East Grand Rapids, you already know the deal — big, old trees on small lots, branches hanging over everything, and not a lot of room to work with when something goes wrong. Whether it's an 80-year-old red Oak that's dropping deadwood on the roof or a silver Maple near Reeds Lake that split in the last storm, we've seen it before.
East Grand Rapids has the densest mature canopy we work in, and that is not an exaggeration. The neighborhoods around Reeds Lake, Gaslight Village, Wealthy Street east of Lakeside, and the lots running up toward Fisk Lake are carrying century-old red Oak and sugar Maple planted when the 1920s Tudors and Arts and Crafts homes went in. The trees are now a foot from the foundation, 80 feet over the slate roof, and rooted into 40-foot lots between driveways. That is a specific set of problems. Oak wilt is the one we lose sleep over in EGR. The red Oak component here is enormous, the lots are close enough that root grafts run across property lines through three or four neighboring trees, and one bad pruning cut on one oak in May can start a chain that costs a whole block its heritage canopy over two seasons. We flatly do not prune red Oak in East Grand Rapids between April and August. The nitidulid sap beetles are flying in that window, fresh wounds are open doors, and we are not going to be the people who lit the fuse. sugar Maple here is the other big species, and the old ones are dealing with girdling roots from the original planting, compacted lawn soil from a century of traffic, and in some neighborhoods anthracnose in wet springs. On the conifer side, almost every Colorado blue Spruce in an EGR front yard is showing Rhizosphaera needlecast from the bottom up. Access is its own job in EGR. The lots are small, the homes are high-value, and the neighbors are close enough that noise, chip-truck staging, and crane setups all have to be coordinated before the crew arrives. Matthew Bossche, ISA Certified Arborist MI-4776A, walks every East Grand Rapids property before a quote goes out.
We're B's Trees, and we're in East Grand Rapids neighborhoods constantly. The dense century-Oak canopy around Reeds Lake and Gaslight Village is exactly the kind of work that fills our week — and the oak wilt pressure on those Tudor-era red Oaks keeps us vigilant. EGR is the neighborhood where we lose the most sleep over what a June pruning cut could do. Need a tree pruned, removed, or just looked at by someone who actually knows what they're talking about, give us a call.

We work in EGR enough to know what's going on with the trees here. A few things come up over and over:
Maybe. East Grand Rapids has a tree ordinance that's stricter than most cities around here. Permits are needed for right-of-way trees, and the city regulates removal of significant trees on private property in certain situations. Violations can mean fines. If you're thinking about taking a tree down in EGR, we'll check the requirements when we come out for the estimate, handle the permit if one's needed, and make sure everything is compliant before we start.
Tree removal in EGR typically runs a bit higher than surrounding areas because of the tight lots and proximity to structures. Crane-assisted removal and careful rigging are the norm here, not the exception. Here are typical ranges:

We're not a franchise. We're not a call center. We're a locally owned tree service, and EGR is part of our regular working area — not an occasional dispatch.
I'm Matthew Bossche, ISA Certified Arborist. I started B's Trees because I got tired of seeing tree companies show up with a chainsaw and no plan. In a city like EGR, where you've got a 70-foot oak 6 feet from the house and the neighbor's fence on the other side, you can't afford to wing it. We look at the tree, we look at the site, and we figure out the right approach before anyone starts cutting.
We've got a crane for the tight-lot removals that EGR is full of, climbing gear for the ones that don't need it, and we clean up everything when we're done. Fully insured, no deposit, free estimates. Pretty simple.
Nothing complicated:
When a storm drops a limb on your roof at 3 AM or ice takes out half a canopy on your narrow EGR lot, you need someone who picks up the phone. We provide 24/7 emergency tree service throughout East Grand Rapids. We'll get to your property, assess the situation, make it safe, and work with your insurance company if needed. We don't charge for emergency estimates, and we prioritize situations that pose immediate danger to people or structures. For more on what to do when a tree fails, see our blog: How to Assess Storm Damage to Your Trees.
East Grand Rapids has a tree ordinance that regulates removal of significant trees on private property, particularly in the public right-of-way and near Reeds Lake. Permits are required for certain removals and the city may require replanting. During your free estimate, our ISA Certified Arborist will identify whether your tree requires a permit and handle the paperwork so you stay in compliance.
Most East Grand Rapids properties have compact lots with large trees close to homes, fences, and neighboring structures. We use crane-assisted removal and specialized rigging techniques to lift sections vertically rather than dropping them laterally. This protects your property, your neighbor's property, and minimizes lawn damage — even on narrow driveways and tight side yards.
East Grand Rapids has a mature canopy dominated by red Oaks, sugar Maples, and Norway Maples, along with surviving American Elms and ornamental species like crabapples and lindens. Many of the city's largest trees are 80 to 100+ years old. The legacy of Dutch Elm Disease led to heavy maple and oak replanting in the mid-20th century, and those replacement trees are now the established canopy.
Tree removal in East Grand Rapids typically ranges from $600 to $5,000+, depending on tree size, proximity to structures, and access constraints. The compact lots and close neighbors common in EGR often require crane-assisted removal or careful rigging, which can affect pricing. We provide free on-site estimates with no obligation and no deposit required.
It depends on the cause and severity of the lean. If the tree is structurally sound and the lean is natural, cabling and bracing systems can reduce the risk of failure and extend the tree's safe lifespan by decades. If the lean is caused by root failure, internal decay, or recent storm damage, removal is usually the safer option. Our arborist will assess the tree on-site and give you an honest recommendation — we always prefer to preserve trees when it's safe to do so.
