Forest Hills, Michigan

ISA Certified Arborist serving Forest Hills and surrounding communities. Expert tree care, honest pricing, 24/7 emergency response.

If you live in Forest Hills, you already know — your property is basically a forest. Big oaks, old beeches, maples everywhere, and most of them have been growing for 60 to 100 years on hilly ground with ravines and slopes. It looks great until a storm cracks a limb over the roof or a tree on the hillside starts leaning toward the house.

Forest Hills is not one place — the Forest Hills school district covers parts of Ada, Cascade Township, and Grand Rapids Township, and the tree work changes from lot to lot depending on which pocket you are in. What unites it is the wooded estate feel. Properties here tend to be carved out of original forest with a lot of natural-area buffer left in place, so we are working less on street trees and more on woodland-edge trees, interior forest trees shading the house, and natural-area restoration where the understory has gone brush and invasive. The dominant species story is red Oak. Forest Hills has a heavy red Oak component in the standing canopy, and that makes oak wilt the single biggest thing we manage here. Root grafts between mature red Oaks run through what used to be connected woodlot, which means a single infected tree on one estate can put oaks on the neighboring estate at risk without ever leaving the forest floor. We flatly do not prune red Oak in Forest Hills between April and July — the nitidulid sap beetles carrying the spores are flying in that window, and a fresh wound on a mature oak is exactly what they are looking for. On the conifer side, the white Pine interior trees around Ada and Cascade Township are mostly in good shape, but the blue Spruce that was planted as screening 30 years ago is showing Rhizosphaera needlecast almost universally. Access in Forest Hills is the other constant. Long wooded driveways, natural-area buffers that do not take machinery well, and tree-to-tree work deep in the interior mean we plan every job around what the site can actually support. Matthew Bossche, ISA Certified Arborist MI-4776A, walks the property before the quote — in Forest Hills the plan is the job.

We're B's Trees, and Forest Hills is on our daily working map. The wooded estates across Ada, Cascade Township, and Grand Rapids Township — the whole Forest Hills school district footprint — are where we spend real time. The interior-forest red Oak stands, the oak wilt risk running through connected root zones, and the natural-area buffers that don't take machinery are all part of the job we do constantly. Need a tree pruned, removed, or just looked at by someone who actually knows what they're talking about, give us a call.

What We See Most in Forest Hills

We work in Forest Hills enough to know what's going on with the trees here. A few things come up over and over:

Why Forest Hills Homeowners Call Us

We're not a franchise. We're not a call center. I'm Matthew Bossche, ISA Certified Arborist. I started B's Trees because I got tired of seeing tree companies show up with a chainsaw and no plan. We do things differently — we look at the tree, we look at the site, and we figure out the right approach before anyone starts cutting. That matters when you've got an 80-foot oak between the house and a ravine and there's zero room for mistakes.

Forest Hills' big lots and mature trees often need equipment smaller companies don't have. We've got a crane for the jobs that need it, climbing gear for the ones that don't, and we clean up everything when we're done. Fully insured, no deposit, free estimates. Pretty simple.

How It Works

Nothing complicated:

How Much Does Tree Work Cost in Forest Hills?

Tree service pricing in Forest Hills depends on tree size, job complexity, site access, and equipment needs. Forest Hills' larger lots often provide good equipment access, but the area's mature hardwoods on slopes tend to be bigger and more complex than typical suburban trees. Here are typical ranges for residential work:

Frequently Asked Questions — Forest Hills Tree Service

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Forest Hills?

Forest Hills is an unincorporated community, so tree removal permits depend on which township your property falls in — Grand Rapids Township, Ada Township, or Cascade Township. Generally, routine removal on existing residential lots does not require a permit. However, properties within natural features setbacks (especially near the Thornapple River) or in HOA communities may need township review or architectural committee approval before removal. B's Trees can help you determine what applies to your property during a free estimate.

How much does tree removal cost in Forest Hills, Michigan?

Tree removal in Forest Hills typically ranges from $500 to $5,000 or more, depending on tree size, species, proximity to structures, and site access. Many Forest Hills properties have large lots with good equipment access, which can reduce cost. However, the area's mature oaks and beeches near homes, ravines, or the Thornapple River corridor often require crane-assisted removal or precision rigging. We provide free on-site estimates so you get an accurate price for your specific situation.

What trees grow best in Forest Hills' hilly terrain?

Forest Hills' rolling terrain and well-drained soils support a rich hardwood canopy. red Oak, white Oak, American Beech, sugar Maple, and shagbark Hickory thrive on the upland ridges and hillsides. The ravines and Thornapple River corridor support moisture-tolerant species like silver Maple, sycamore, and basswood. When replacing removed trees, our arborist recommends species matched to your specific slope, soil, and sun exposure rather than generic nursery picks.

When is the best time to prune trees in Forest Hills?

Late fall through early spring (November through March) is ideal for pruning most hardwoods in Forest Hills. Trees are dormant, disease transmission risk is lowest, and bare canopies make structural problems easier to spot. The critical exception is oaks — never prune oaks between April and July, when oak wilt fungus spreads via sap beetles. Beech trees are also best pruned during dormancy to limit beech bark disease exposure. Our arborist schedules species-appropriate timing for each project.

Do you work on properties along the Thornapple River in Forest Hills?

Yes. We regularly work on Thornapple River corridor properties in Forest Hills. Trees along the river face bank erosion that undermines root systems, wind channeling through the valley that increases storm damage, and flood-zone moisture that accelerates root rot. Our arborist evaluates which trees stabilize the bank and should be preserved versus which pose a hazard. We follow best practices for work near waterways and can help navigate any setback requirements.
